Project Cinemas

Why cinema’s?

  1. they offer an incredible resource to communities, bringing together audiences and talent all while supporting local and creative economies and providing a critical third space for audiences new and returning.

  2. within their industry, they’ve been taken for granted as benefiting from the production system when in reality due to rapidly escalating operating costs its forced many beloved institutions to shutter their doors leaving their audiences without a local spot to meet their neighbors around curated film programs.

What defines a cinema in the scope of this project?

While many think of commercial cinema’s first, this project is highlighting the curated and local spaces and programming in third spaces.

In NYC alone there are 30+ cinemas running regular programming who fall within the parameters above. Everyday they engage with and support audiences connecting with each other and filmmakers, staff, local restaurants and coffee shops and so much more.

What is Third Space Strategies doing?

Currently we are developing the strategy for bespoke programs and a first of its kind data-driven report in tandem with collaborators and partners at Columbia University, Film at Lincoln Center, Art House New York and the Mayors Office of Media and Entertainment as well as other industry stakeholders.
